Corrective Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease, and cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain. Teeth that are crooked or not in the right place can also detract from one’s appearance.

Beautiful, straight teeth blend in to your face and are associated with numerous positive qualities. Nowadays, thanks to state-of-the-art orthodontic techniques, aesthetically pleasing teeth are available to everybody.

Dr. Taylor’s field of specialization is orthodontic treatment for children, teenagers, and also adults, using modern methods and nearly invisible orthodontic appliances.

Treatments

This is the most common reason for patients to want braces.  In extreme cases it may be necessary to remove teeth to make adequate space.

This patient was bothered by the spaces between his teeth. After a short period of braces, we were able to close the spaces and give him the smile he always dreamed of.  Occasionally a glued in retainer is required to maintain this result.  In some cases, fillings are needed to increase the size of naturally small teeth to fully close the space.

This patient is missing two permanent teeth.  There are two possible ways to treat this problem.  If you have enough space, then we will leave enough space for your dentist to replace these missing teeth after your braces.  If you start with a lot of crowding, then it may be possible to shift the teeth together to close the space left by the missing tooth or teeth.

This is when your bottom teeth are in front of your upper teeth. If not fixed this can potentially cause excessive wear of your teeth and/or cause jaw joint problems.  Occasionally we will decide to defer treating this type of bite until after you have finished growing.  With growth this type of bite can reoccur even after treatment with braces.

This is when your front teeth don’t touch. The most common reason for this malocclusion is because of prolonged thumb or digit sucking.  Occasionally it can also occur due to natural growth tendencies. A common treatment approach is to place an appliance called a crib which acts as a gentle reminder to prevent finger or thumb sucking.  Sometimes this is all the treatment that is needed but, in some cases, it is combined with braces to achieve ideal results.

This is when your top teeth overlap your bottom teeth and your bottom teeth sometime impinge on the roof of your mouth.  Commonly prudent use of elastics or a short period of fixed springs are necessary to help correct.

Commonly involves making space for permanent teeth that don’t have enough room to erupt and/or widening your dental arches. This type of treatment implies that a second phase of treatment may be necessary in the future, but this is not always the case.  These patients are usually between the ages of 6-9.

Also known as orthognathic surgery is a type of treatment used to correct severe malocclusions. This type of treatment is needed when your jaws are maligned in a way that makes it impossible for us to align your teeth properly with braces alone.  Braces are required before, during and after your surgical procedure.  The surgery is performed by an Oral Maxillofacial surgeon who normally works out of a hospital.   This is a major procedure and will require you to schedule some time away from work or school while you heal (typically 2-3 weeks).  After your surgery we continue to put the finishing touches on your brand-new smile.  This normally takes about 6-12 months.
