The Finishing Touches

The day has finally come, and we have taken your braces off!  What now? Retainers of course.

Your body is constantly changing throughout your life and with these changes there is the possibility of your teeth shifting.   Your retainers are provided to minimize the extent of these changes.  Your teeth will move slightly with time just as your eyesight changes with age.

Some important points concerning your retainers:

  • Wear your retainer as instructed by your doctor. This is your insurance policy to maintaining your beautiful smile.
  • Remove your retainer when eating. Place it in the case provided to you.
  • Clean your retainer regularly. Do NOT use toothpaste. Warm water (not boiling) and liquid soap with a regular toothbrush is best. Denture type tablets can be used but they do not replace brushing.
  • If you have pets or are visiting a house that has them protect your retainer. Animals LOVE to chew on them. They make the best chew toys.
  • Retainers are not indestructible, and replacements are expensive so take care of them. If treated properly they can last for years. If abused they will not last and will need to be replaced.
  • Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
