Emergency Care

Home / Emergency Care

Thankfully true orthodontic emergencies are rare, but we will be available to help you.  After having your braces placed you might be surprised to learn that many of the common problems with braces can be solved temporarily by yourself until you can get to our office.

We will instruct and provide you with the supplies to independently be able to manage most of the common occurrences.

Even if you are able to alleviate your discomfort please call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem.  If left damaged for an extended period of time this can lead to disruptions to your treatment plans.

Most Common Concerns

General Discomfort

Once your braces have been placed it is common to experience some general soreness in your mouth, and teeth may be tender to bite on.  This generally resolves on its own in two-three days.

During this time a soft diet is encouraged.  If needed you may take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) if no medical contraindications exist.  It is generally advisable to avoid taking Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or Aspirin as these medications can actually slow tooth movement.  Minor irritations of your gingiva, lips and cheeks are also common.  Again, this will generally resolve on its own as your mouth becomes accustomed to the presence of your braces.

During this time the placement of dental wax provided to you can help ease the transition phase.

Poking Wire

During the movement of your teeth the wires will also tend to shift within the braces and can potentially cause an irritation.

Most times using a fingernail or a pencil eraser you can gently push the poking portion of the wire out of harm’s way or you can also simply cover with dental wax.

Loose Brackets

If the bracket is still attached to the wire and not causing any discomfort then it can be left as is until we are able to see you at the office.

If your regular adjustment appointment is within 7-10 days, then no need to make a special visit.

If you are experiencing discomfort again cover with dental wax until we can see you to take care of the problem.
